said it before and I'll say it again. www.bodylastics.com

might seem strange working out with resistance bands but trust me, they work. the variety of exercise you can do with them is unreal. would cost you £1000's in gym equipment to get a set up like this.

great for pump and toning, body builders use em back stage at competition for pump before they go on stage, but no good for building muscle massthumbsup

rubbish.

your muscles can't differentiate lifting free weights or pulling elastic?

Muscle is built by resistance training the muscle. Putting progressive stress to force them to adapt. The bands on the site have links to enable more than one to be applied at anytime. It gives you anywhere from 5lbs of resistance up to 127lbs.

Id love to see you bicep curl 127lbs and say it can't build muscle.laughing

put the desired amount of resistance in bands around the back and do resisted push up. same action different move.

lat pull downs are easy. set resistance again and hook door anchor over the top, kneel down and go for it.

shoulder press can be done also. just stand on the bands with both feet lift each side up with the hand grip and start shoulder pressing.

there isn't anything in the gym yet which I haven't found I can do with bands.

this is taken from wilki mate.. Resistance training should not be confused with weightlifting, powerlifting or bodybuilding, which are competitive sports involving different types of strength training with non-elastic forces such as gravity (weight training or cliometrics) rather an immovable resistance (isometrics, usually the body's own muscles or a structural feature such as a door-frame

no where in there does it say bands can't be used to build mass. Im not talking swarzanegger style mass. I mean an extra 10-20lbs of mass, a normal amount joe public would look to achieve going to the gym.

If you are seriously into body building and competing then the gym is for you. but for someone looking to buy a bench for home, as the thread was started for, he isn't going to be going into mr olympia just yet.

Dr Jim Stoppani does a decent piece comparing the benefits of free weights and elastic for anyone interested.

Bands are mediocre at best. They are good for rehab etc... but there isn't enough INITIAL resistance, ie at the start of the movement which is arguably the most important bit as the band hasn't been stretched, and so its only the range of movement that gets truly worked where you're already strong in comparison.

Bench for example, pressing the band at the start would have no resistance, but at the top there is loads. The core component of bench is the chest, once its over half way triceps take over. Muscles evolved to be the counterpart of gravity, so using gravity as the prime resistance will yield biggest gains.

Bands won't apply enough pressure to reform bones, how say heavy squats or deadlifting would. The 3 arguable most important staples in a programme is squat, benchpress and deadlift.... elastics just can not mimic these.

You say pressups will do the same which is just not true, both mechanically and physically. A strong bench starts with strong legs, shoulders pinned back and a natural decline. You can't mimic this with bands no matter where you put them.

As for the original post, go for it. With a steady bench, a straight bar and plenty of weight there is nothing you can't achieve. Although imo for any strength or building regime squat holds priority over everything, just for the amount of growth hormone, IGF-1 and testosterone secretion directly related to the exercies which no ponsey curl or crunch will ever achieve. More test = more mass and strength, simple as that.

If money is an issue, go get a fuck off tyre and throw the cunt round the garden, failing that, rocks all the way.

then your strength is mediocre. Tell me how I could squat heavy with bands? and get the same resistance at the start of the squat as I do at the top?

wouldn't bother with preacher curls, stick to compound lifts with good form and make sure you've deadlifts and squats in there and you can't go too wrong.
