Has it suddenly become de facto within Hard House to release all these bootlegs we're currently seeing? It wasn't that long ago a backlash happened on here when another artist was actually getting permission via a frowned upon licensing method for official covers but, ultimately getting the rights to release them.

Just seems like a whitewash of bootlegs and the people releasing them are open about it.

Hasnt this been happening for years??? If it's 'ok' for one of the biggest names to do it then people will follow suit.

Good point Ross. They shouldn't be released though!

Of course bootlegs have Ross, anonymously because of possible repercussions. Lately it seems anything goes without that concern More so in the last year has it become a bit rife with the bootlegs.

Going back to what I first posted. The amount of shit someone got for backdoor licensing, which was still legal and paid for, to release official covers yet there's none of that with this. Seems like attitudes have changed.

More likely cos there's no money in it I reckon.
If you bootlegged a track a few years ago, just selling 500 whites would net you a small profit, and 1000+ was some good earnings, easy done as ya know with the right track. Costs more to make the track than you get back now if using an engineer, which most are, so pointless threatening to sue for money that isn't being made?
I had a snotty phone call from a certain producer in 2004-ish threatening to sue if I released a booty I had done of 1 of their tracks, and was given the advice by a certain retiring dj to tell em to fuck off and that I'd only made 300 copies, so wasn't making owt out of it laughing
In the end I denied all knowledge of it as I'd already had em pressed and was in the process of distributing em, sold pretty well tho not sayin how many evil

They love them so much they felt they needed to be brought to a new audience. It's all done for love.

Just in general, the email notifications being fed from facebook etc with yet another bootleg someone is releasing. Quite surprised how open they are.

Interesting someone picking at Steve Hill, he is one who actually applies for license approval to do covers.

My only take on it is it's massively unhealthy for hard house, given it is not at its strongest. People need to realise this is exactly what happened with Happy Hardcore with endless rip offs and dodgy covers, which dominated. That scene died on its arse due to people rinsing out the aforementioned, all around the same time hard house started to peak. Not so much of a coincidence. Running my shop I watched a healthy scene go from selling strong units to being one or two releases a month. It eventually turned itself around with a different mindset.

i agree, not only do i not want to hear a bookleg, its is hardly ever as good as the original. Your right in the fact that we are seeing more and more of this. I dont know about you guys but i lived for hearing the new track from Glazby rather than his latest remix.

The reason I said he gets clearance was based on how open some are on owning up to the bootlegs they are releasing.

I reckon it would be fucking hilarious if someone under an alias started bootlegging brand new released tracks by artists who have bootlegged other peoples tracks in the past and started giving them out for free. Would piss them right off, cause a bit of popcorn required drama and would maybe stop them doing it again in the future.

Someone has done something similar to that in the Psy Trance scene recently, except they've aimed their sights at the artists like Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, Eskimo, Michele Adamson etc... - the ones verging on becoming commercial (as commercial as Psy Trance gets anyway).

Playing devils advocate here Dave so, with that in mind because someone thinks they can't be sued goes one step further by putting their name to a released bootleg. Especially digital, where we're not talking a white unscribed vinyl paid for cash, it can be traced back easily. It was more of a statement than a question as I know why people think it's of no concern but, it's a presumption based on wrong information.

laughing Do you blame them?  You see my point, you wouldn't have put your name to it.

There's no money in it whats so ever, so yeah people could sue and for what ? It would cost far to much money to sue someone just because they sold 10 copies on toolbox and got to number 1 for a few days.

Read somewhere you can only sue for a proportion/all of the profits made and can't claim damages etc. The reason people are so happy to put their name to it is probably becasue they know they are untouchable even in the worst case scenario and legal action is persued.

The question was why are people openly putting their names to released bootlegs lately, not why are they releasing them. As though it's ok for some reason. Just to clarify the point being made.

Actually Tom, I think people forget that has no bearing if someone really wanted to pursue it. Not for a percentage which yes would be unlikely but, more plausible based on moral rights which is different, or even droit moral if inclined (laughing)   So, for your money.

Not sure why you think I'm offended. It's a question on why it has become common practice to no longer be anonymous with bootlegs.
